PODIATRY

A state registered podiatrist is a fully qualified chiropodist that specialises in the lower limb biomechanics evaluating your gait and movement patterns of the muscles and joints. The podiatrist is qualified to assess, diagnose and treat these problems of the lower limb from the diabetic patient to the sports injury.

At activ8rehab the podiatrist takes one hour to assess your problem allowing time for a clinical examination, evaluation of foot wear and video gait analysis.

There are several types of foot postures each with their own problems. Often with age the feet tend to collapse inwards towards a flat foot posture, termed “Pronation”. This also occurs as a hereditary problem within families and also particular races. The opposite to pronation is a high arched foot termed “Supination”. A supinated foot is often related to stiffness and also tightness in the lower leg musculature. Then there is the normal neutral foot, which presents with a normal biomechanical alignment.

The podiatrist will assess your biomechanical needs in relation to posture and injury symptoms. Often the course of action will be to produce custom orthotic insoles. A plaster of paris cast will be taken of your feet and positive mould produced where accurate corrections are made intrinsic and extrinsic to the custom orthotic insole. These orthotics can be placed in your daily and sporting shoes to help correct your biomechanical problems that are causing your symptoms. It essential that there is a balance between sufficient correction and control of the foot and shock absorption during walking and running. Amazing results can be achieved with this process allowing return to lifestyle activities and sport.

Conditions treated:

Heel pain – plantar fasciitis
Shin splints – medial tibial stress syndrome
Achilles tendonitis
Metatarsal pain – Morton’s metatarsalgia
Stress fractures
Knee pain
Hip/back pain
Flat or high arched feet
Ligamentous instability
Degenerative arthritic joints
Hallux valgus - bunions

Sometimes just recommending an appropriate pair of shoes is required to help resolve the condition. This is often utilised in conjunction with the custom orthotic insoles.

On fitting of these orthotic devices the podiatrist will give the weaning-in advice necessary to make an uneventfully transition into these corrective devices. Also re-evaluation, utilising the video analysis showing the gait correction resulting from the orthotics
