This therapy service is designed to recover movement, maximise mobility achieving stability, strength and co-ordination. Often one or more than one of these parameters are affected following an injury or surgery. Through the indepth clinical examination and the use of specific equipment the physiotherapist can investigate posture, biomechanics, muscle performance, movement patterns and co-ordination to determine the cause(s) and formulate a rehabilitation programme of treatment. There are often external influences that may be involved especially in sport. The use of video analysis and the computerised software can analyse poor movement technique or equipment problems ie. Mountain/Road bike set-up, inappropriate footwear etc.

It is essential that the initial consultation is for an hour to allow all of the above testing where necessary to be performed, with a diagnosis and a treatment strategy and initial exercise programmes to be issued. For this initial consultation any previous investigations ie. X-rays, MRI or CT scans, DVD ‘s or pictures of surgery are required if possible.

Treatments often involve soft tissue mobilisation , joint mobilisation/manipulation to recover movement. Electrotherapy to aid in tissue healing in association with specific progressive exercise and finally a strengthening exercise regime to complete recovery and prevent recurrence.

During this process the physiotherapist may require to refer in-house to other clinical specialities a podiatrist or pilates instructor as part of the overall comprehensive treatment plan.

The success of this examination and treatment strategy is fundamentally down to the combination of the skill of the physiotherapist inconjunction with the sports scientific approach to analysis of biomechanics and muscle performance with the use of the latest technology.

This is why many orthopaedic surgeons and doctors refer into the practice for rehabilitation of their patient pre and post-operatively. Many of the procedures seen are:

KNEE

Arthroscopic procedures – ie menisectomy, debridment, plica resection, lateral release, autologous cartilage implantation etc...
Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction
Posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction
Postero-lateral corner stabilisation.
Oxford unicompartmental knee replacement
Total Knee replacement
Fracture reduction

HIP

Arthroscopic procedures – Labral resection/repair, debridment etc
Total hip replacement
Birmingham hip resurfacing

ANKLE

Arthroscopic procedures- EUA, debridment etc
Lateral ligament reconstruction
Fracture reduction.
Achilles tendon repair

SPINE

Spinal fusion
Dynamic stabilisation
Disc replacement
Discectomy
Epidural & facet injections

SHOULDER

Arthroscopic procedures – subacromial decompression, acromioclavicular excision, Bankart’s repair, Capsular shift, Rotator cuff repair etc.
Fracture reduction

ELBOW/WRIST/HAND

Tendon repairs
Fracture reductions
Ligament repairs

Non-surgical injuries are also frequently seen, from general wear and tear of osteoarthritic joints, working to recover movement and strength to help decelerate the deterioration and recover function. To normal everyday musculoskeletal sprains and strains that require immediate attention to enable full recovery and return to normal activity and sport.

Many of our physiotherapists at activ8rehab have sport specific specialities from rowing, football, rugby, waterskiing/wakeboarding etc. with others specialising in spinal rehabilitation.
